Happy Birthday!!
Today we celebrate the decent of the Holy Spirit on the Disciples. We are not sure of who was in that Upper Room at the time. Some say just the 11 disciples, some say that Mary, Jesus’ mother was with them, Others say that there were a good number of the followers. Who were there is besides the point. The point is that the Holy Spirit came upon these people and freed them of the fear that had kept them behind locked doors. Not they were able to go into the street and proclaim the death, and resurrection of the Lord.
Our old friend, Henri Newon tells us, “Without Pentecost the Christ event – te life, death, and resurrection of Jesus – remains imprisoned in history as something to remember, think about and reflect on. The Spirit of Jesus come to dwell within us so that we can become living Christ here and now.”
May we all be open to the Spirit today as “She” continues the work Jesus started so long ago.
(I say “She” in regards the Holy Spirit because the Hebrew word for spirit “ruach” is a feminine noun.)
